The Research Centre for Contemporary History in Hamburg (Forschungsstelle für Zeitgeschichte in Hamburg – FZH), in cooperation with the Hamburg Institute for Advanced Study (HIAS), invites applications for up to three fellowships on urbanity and urban history in a contemporary historical perspective. The invitation is subject to the release of funds by the Ministry of Science, Research, Equality and Districts of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. This call aims at scholars working at universities or research institutions outside of Germany. Fellowships should commence in 2024. The duration of the fellowships is up to four months.
The FZH conducts research on the history of the twentieth century with a focus on the history of Hamburg and Northern Germany and special emphasis on National Socialism and its remembrance after 1945, the urban history of Hamburg since the 1950s, and contemporary history since the 1970s. The FZH has been operating since 1997 in the form of a foundation under private law, supported by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. Since 2000, it has been an academic institution at the University of Hamburg. The director of the FZH holds a professorship at the History Department of the University. The institute maintains a research library, an archive, and an extensive oral history collection.
The Hamburg Institute for Advanced Study e.V. (HIAS) is a publicly funded non-profit association founded in 2019 and jointly supported by nine Hamburg academic institutions. HIAS offers scholars of all disciplines and career stages as well as artists fellowships to carry out projects of their own choosing.
The FZH-Fellowship in Contemporary Urban History is supposed to strengthen the international network of the institute and is therefore open to early postdoctoral researchers and senior researchers (advanced postdocs, professors) with a record of accomplishment of research in contemporary urban history or neighbouring disciplines. We are particularly interested in methodologically and thematically innovative projects in urban history since the 1970s. Topics include but are not limited to politics and administration of the modern city – and various forms of participation of its citizens –, urban economy, city-wide and district-related urban identities, aspects of spatial and social mobility as well as urban culture and subculture. Comparative projects are particularly welcome. A focus on the history of Hamburg is not required for an application.
We offer Fellows the opportunity to work on their individual research projects and actively engage with the scholarly community at the FZH, the HIAS, and other academic institutions in Hamburg. They participate in public events and colloquia at the FZH and the HIAS and benefit from various opportunities for transdisciplinary exchange and networking. The FZH encourages the use of its research library and its archive as well as other libraries, archives, and research institutions in Hamburg. There are no teaching obligations.
The fellowships entail roundtrip economy travel to Hamburg, a monthly stipend based on current salary, housing at the guesthouse of the Hamburg University – subject to availability – or a housing allowance, and office space. Health insurance assistance can be provided.
Applications may be submitted in English and should include:
- A cover letter outlining the applicant’s motivation and the link between his or her research and the thematic focus of the FZH as well as information on the preferred date of the research visit.
- Description of the planned research project (max. 1,000 words).
- CV including a list of relevant publications.
Please send your application electronically as one file (pdf format) via Email to Dr. Christoph Strupp at: strupp@zeitgeschichte-hamburg.de by August 10, 2023.
