CfP: Cities in German History

The DAAD German History Research Group of the University of Cambridge invites proposals for presentations (20-30 mins) that deal with the history of German cities and with the role of cities in German history. Presentations will form part of an online seminar series between 6 May and 17 June 2021.

Deadline: 12 April 2021.

The German History Research Group of the University of Cambridge invites proposals for papers (20-30 minutes) on the history of German cities. Presentations can engage with any period and aspect of the political, economic, social, cultural or architectural history of cities. The aim is to explore the special role of cities from the Holy Roman Empire to modern Germany. Presentation topics could include, for example, the medieval city, the early modern city, the changing role of cities in the long nineteenth century, the colonial city and the role of inner colonisation, or the relationship between city and countryside, between metropolis and periphery. We also encourage presenters to reflect on what the study of cities can add to German history more broadly.

Please send your abstract (max. 300 words), together with a short paragraph summarising your CV, institutional affiliation and research interests, to germanhistoryworkshop@gmail.com by 12 April 2021.
