This conference will explore cartography and the construction and contestation of territoriality in Asia from the late eighteenth to the twentieth century. In particular, we seek to answer the question of how ideas of territoriality were cartographically produced, circulated and interpreted within Asia and between Europe and Asia. Conference takes places on 24th/25th November 2022 and is hosted by the Centre for Transcultural Studies and the Gotha Perthes Collection, Erfurt University.

The panel will explore the question of which spatial imaginaries and geopolitical concepts significantly influenced the debate in the incipient processes of de- and reterritorialisation in the transitional phases of the 20th century (1914-18 – 1933-45 – 1989/90).
